Boca Grande - Wintertime Wading
Capt.
Geoffrey Page is called “Mr. Artificial” because that’s the
way he loves to fish. Growing up in nearby Venice, Florida, Geoffrey has spent
a lifetime fishing the back bays of Charlotte Harbor and Boca Grande. Geoffrey
and Capt. Rick are longtime friends who meet regularly to fish against each other
in the Professional Redfish Tournament circuit, but today they share a fine day
wading the wintertime flats near the famed Boca Grande Pass.
Governor Charlie Crist
On
today’s Sportsman’s Adventures we are honored to have as our very
special guests, Florida’s 44th Governor, Charlie Crist and Rodney Barretto,
Chairman of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. It’s
not every day that you get fishing partners like these two guys so the pressure
is on for Capt Rick and Capt. Bill Harbaugh to catch fish and put on a good show!
We leave the dock in Islamorada on a breezy day in May and it’s a one
hour boat ride to the shallow water wrecks in the Gulf of Mexico. The weather
turns windy and the waters turn muddy but neither our distinguished guests or
the fish seem to mind.
2006 Maverick Owners Tournament
Check
out the action at the 20th annual 2006 Maverick Boat Company Southeast Owners
Fishing Tournament. Set in the Village of Islamorada, in the upper Florida Keys,
this fishing tournament is an opportunity for Capt. Rick Murphy and other owners
of Maverick, Hewes and Pathfinder boats to meet and share their experiences, while
benefiting from some of the best fishing in the world. This tropical paradise
is an ideal setting for these owners to get away for a few days and enjoy their
boats. Enjoy their fishing and festivities along with them.
Bahamas # 1
On
today’s Sportsman’s Adventures we travel to one of the world’s
premier angling destinations .....the Bahamas mon ! The flats, reefs and steep
drop-offs that surround the 700 hundred islands make up the Bahamas attract a
variety of fish and fishermen alike.
On part 1 of this special 2 part adventure, Capt Rick Murphy will join Ian
Radimaker and Adam Dan aboard the Contender 33 for some tackle-testing, gut-busting,
blue water, big game yellow fin tuna fishing. Ian and Adam were born and raised
here in the beautiful Bahamas in fact Ian owns and operates Harbourside Marina
on nearby Nassau. Business is one thing, but fishing is Ian’s real love.
Anytime he can share one of his hot spots he’s more then happy to oblige
and no one knows the hot sots better than him. So hold on to your chair and enjoy
some big tuna action.
Bahamas # 2
Get
ready for part 2 of our special Bahamas fishing adventure. Last week we introduced
you to Ian Radimaker and Adam Dan, two native Bahamians who have spent their entire
lives fishing and diving the beautiful and bountiful waters of the Bahamas. Ian,
Adam and Capt Rick spent the day on the Dutch Bar....an underwater seamount famous
for attracting big schools of yellowfin tuna. These tuna bite best in the early
morning and late afternoon when the light levels are low, so in the middle of
the day we changed our tactics. And headed to James Point, another underwater
seamount located just off Eleuthera’s northeast coast.
Biscayne Bay Snook
Capt
Chris Hueston is a Miami native with a passion for snook fishing. You might say
his whole family shares that same passion...you see, Chris’s brother Ron
is a fishing guide too who also specializes in snook fishing. When? Well nighttime
of course. In fact, they call both Ron and Chris the “Midnight Riders”
cause that’s when they love to catch snook. Capt Chris Hueston likes to
spend his nighttimes concentrating on the schools of snook that ambush the baitfish
that pass between the eddy pools created by the jetty rocks.
Stu Tourney 2007
Today’s
Sportsman’s Adventures takes us to exotic Costa Rica to fish in the first
annual Stu Apte Fly Fishing Sailfish Tournament. Twenty eight anglers from across
the United States travel here to team up and compete, while honoring theStu Apte,
man that brought us to Costa Rica, a fisherman’s paradise. Each winter and
spring, huge schools of Pacific sailfish migrate through these tropical waters,
making perfect targets for those armed with heavy weight fly rods, top notch fly
reels and a box full of large pink flies!
Capt. Rick Murphy and his fishing partner Steve Stanley, the senior vice president
of Construction for Outback Steakhouses, are part of the excitement with Capt.
Elvin Molina and mate Leonardo Picado.
Destin
Today’s
Sportsman’s Adventures takes us to the Florida Panhandle for some deep water
fishing in the northern Gulf Of Mexico. Here, summer time is primetime. Capt Rick
Murphy and our special guest, Skip Lyshon from Maverick Boat Company have traveled
to the world famous fishing village of Destin, Florida to meet their local host,
Capt Pat Dineen and his first mate Grasshopper aboard their 48 ft. sportfisher
for a day of exciting deep water fishing...”Outta Here“
Canoe
On today’s Sportsman’s Adventures Capt Rick Murphy is going back...way
back to the back country of Everglades National Park. Here he fishes waters so
remote that we’ll need the portability of a canoe to get to the best spots.
Wanna catch redfish, snook, black drum and trout ??? Ricks’ going to let
us in on some of his shallow water secrets.
Herky Bass
Our
special guest for today’s adventure is Herky Huffman, a central Florida
businessman who is also a member of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission. Appointed by the Governor, along with his fellow Commissioners, he
is charged with the important task of managing fish and wildlife resources for
their long term well being and the benefit of the people. Herky Huffman has been
chasing Florida Largemouths all of his life....so naturally, one of his pet projects
is the Florida Bass Conservation Center. This state funded project is dedicated
to the propagation and conservation of Florida’s famous largemouth bass.
Jimbo
On
today’s Sportsman’s Adventures, we leave the dock from Miami’s
Bayside Marina with high spirits even though it is a cool and gloomy December
day. As the first rays of the sun reflect off Miami’s famous downtown skyline
... we begin our day. Wintertime fishing off of Miami’s coastline means
fishing the reef line... sailfish....kingfish...bonita and if you’re lucky,
maybe even African pompano These fish hang near structure like reefs and wrecks.
If you get ‘em on...you gotta get ‘em up or else they’ll hang
you too...!
Murphy
Boys
We’ve gotta pass it on to the next generation right? Take a kid fishing....well
how about taking two kids fishing...How about taking your own two kids fishing.
Capt Rick and his sons, Ridge and Colin, share the boat today. While the kids
got a lesson in backcountry fishing....Rick got a lesson in exercising his patience.
Year Ender
On
today’s Sportsman’s Adventures we’ll mark the end of our twelfth
season on the air with a special look back at some of our favorite adventures
from the 2007 season. We fished all across the Florida peninsula in big boats,
fast boats and small canoes and sampled some of the best fishing that this great
state has to offer. One of the trips we made outside of Florida this season was
to the Bahamas...and that’s where we begin this adventure.
